California Regulators Investigate GM's Cruise
We recently brought you the news that the Cruise self-driving taxi service is expanding to Miami. Now, regulators in California have opened an investigation into the safety of its vehicles.
Here’s what you need to know about this development:
- The Investigation: The California Department of Motor Vehicles is investigating Cruise after one of its robotaxis collided with an emergency vehicle in August.
- The Current Situation: Until the DMV’s investigation reaches a conclusion, Cruise has been forced to reduce its active fleet by 50 percent.
- The Possible Outcome: Last month, the California Public Utilities Commission voted to allow Cruise to operate its self-driving cars at all hours of the day across San Francisco. If the DMV deems the vehicles unsafe, the CPUC may revoke this permission.
