Texas Mandates Tesla Tech for EV Chargers
We recently brought you the news that many of the world’s largest carmakers are adding Tesla’s NACS charging ports to their EVs. Now, Texas has announced it will require companies to install Tesla’s technology in all new charging stations to be eligible for federal funds.
Here’s what you need to know about this development:
- The Federal Funds: The federal government is dispersing $5 billion to electrify the US highway system. Texas will receive the biggest portion of those funds – $407.8 million.
- The Federal Requirements: Federal regulations require companies to offer Combined Charging System (CCS) plugs to be eligible for funding. However, they also allow states to add their own rules before distributing the money at the local level.
- The Texas Transportation Commission’s Decision: Despite opposition from charging companies, the Texas Transportation Commission voted unanimously to require firms to add NACS ports to their EV chargers if they wish to receive federal funding.
